Storm Relief - How to Help

Updated September 4, 2017

We here at Asbury believe deeply in helping our community when disaster strikes. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, we see that our brothers and sisters in southeast TX and southwest LA need our assistance. Below, we have outlined the best ways for you to assist us in our efforts.

1. Volunteer opportunities - our Acadiana District is working tirelessly to communicated with Asbury about volunteer needs in our state and in TX. Here is how you can currently assist with those relief efforts.
  • Serve as a volunteer in the Lake Charles area through the Acadiana District. The Acadiana District is asking for ERT certified volunteers only. Volunteers will be working in the Lake Charles District, with St. Luke-Simpson UMC serving as the base of operations. Initial assessments indicate that the primary task will be muckouts. The Acadiana District is planning to have teams working daily, Monday through Friday. ERT certified volunteers may serve any number of days during the week, although it is not recommended to do more than three consecutive days. All  ERT trained volunteers 18 years of age and older are invited and welcome to participate. All volunteers are asked to do the following:
    • email to show willingness and availability to volunteer. If you are ERT certified, please let the district know if you are able to lead a team.
    • complete the standard forms required for all volunteers ( medical info, liability release, and release for emergency medical treatment)

2. Give to UMCOR. All of these funds go directly to relief efforts. Click here to give directly to UMCOR  or you may submit a check to Asbury made out to UMCOR.

3. Flood Relief Buckets

We will continue to update this page with additional ways to assist those in need. If you need help or can provide assistance locally, please contact Jennifer Briggs at the Acadiana Disaster Response division of the Acadiana District office of the UMC.
